Why We Care

When we think of the American flag, we know it is the main symbol of our nation, but why should we care about the flag for any other purpose? We see flags at businesses around town and flown at homes. In schooling from Kindergarten to senior year, we recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag over two thousand times. We show our respect to the flag before sporting events and at any memorial service. If a veteran or soldier dies, their coffin is draped with the stars and stripes before being lowered into the ground.

We deserve to thank our nation’s soldiers and leaders for the freedom we sometimes take for granted. So why do we solute a banner of fabric? This is a question I had. I always just figured it only represented our freedom. However, the American flag is so much more. It is a unifying motif, recognized by all citizens. It reminds us of all the challenges we’ve faced, all the armed forces what they are fighting for, and the strength we have a nation.
